How to Talk to Your Ghost

We've decided to put some information together to help visitors learn how to do their own EVP, especially if they think that they may have a spirit present in their home. It's pretty easy to do and you may even find it kind of fun to do your own investigating.

First of all you need to get together what you need, which isn't much at all.  You will need something to record with of course, the best being a small tape recorder or digital recorder if you have it. Both record EVPs just fine, but with tape you will record the hiss sound that the tape recorder makes. One other piece you will need is an external microphone if you decide to use a tape recorder, because this will help eliminate some on the extra noise. And last is a tape, preferably about 90 minutes and of the best quality you can buy. Don't skimp on the quality of tape or you will be disappointed with the sound of your EVP.

Next step is to set the stage so to speak.  What you want to do is try this at a time that you think will provide the best results.  If you are doing this because you have had some activity, stop and think about what time of the day this was and go from there.  Some say that morning is a good time to try because all is usually quiet.  Let that decision be up to you. You will want the area to be as quiet as possible. Even outside noises are picked up very easily, such as wind which can cause a problem with rustling trees etc. Try to eliminate as much noise as possible that would cause interference.

Once you are ready, you will want to go in the room and shut all doors if possible to cut down on what noise you can. Get into a comfortable position so that you won't be moving around too much.  When you speak be sure to speak loud and speak clearly so that you know you will be heard. Try to avoid whispering because when whispers are picked up on recordings, many times it sounds differently and you can not tell if it is you or the spirit entity. Start your recording off with your name and the date and time.  If there are any others present, you should get them to state their names so that you can have a sample of their voice in case you need to rule them out later if you are unsure of any of the EVPs that you pick up.

EVPs are the one of the things investigators should get excited about.

Hearing what a ghost is trying to say is probably the closest you are going to be able to get to understanding it or trying to get what message it is trying to get across to you. While not all ghosts seem to be able to speak, or want to, other than pictures it will be your more compelling evidence. Some talk loudly and clearly while others are barely audible and sometimes their voices get lost at noise level. While doing your EVP, do ask the entity to speak loudly.  If possible, they will try hard so you can hear them. They do have things they want to say and they will make an effort.

Now for the questions!   It's a good rule that when you ask a question, besides being loud and clear, you will want to give about a 20 second pause before your next question to give the spirit time to answer.  They don't always answer right away.  Also be polite; you don't want to upset a spirit or you may get no response. First off, invite them to talk with you and let them know that you would love to know their answers!   Below is a list of questions that are good ones to ask. But feel free to add your own.  These are just a starting point for you.

What is your name?

What year is it?

How old are you?

When were you born?

Where were you born?

When did you die?

How did you die?

Did you die here?

What are your parent's names?

Do you have any children?

How did you make a living?

Why are you here?

Is something/someone keeping you here?

Do you need my help with anything?

Is this place special to you?

What did you do to be here?

Is anybody else here with you?

Are you married and if yes, what is your spouse's name?

Any time you make a sound or hear something, let it be known on the recording so that you will know what it was when you are listening later.  Many times you will hear sounds that you never heard during recording.  We have quite a few EVPs with very loud bangs while we are there in the room talking.  Those are considered part of your EVP as well.  Some say that it is easier for the spirit to piggy-back on the end of the wave created by the sound.  If you do hear bangs in your recording, listen very closely to the end to see if you hear something. It is said that if you slow down the sound of your recording, that sometimes those loud bangs are actually words that the spirits are saying. So if you get loud banging, try slowing down or speeding up your recording. You may surprised at just what you hear.

When you are done, thank the spirit for speaking with you and let them know that they are to stay  where they are and are not welcome to come with you (unless you are at home).

Depending on how much time you have, sometimes a good thing to do is leave the recorder on and leave the room for a good while to see what else you can pick up.  If you stay in the house try to not make any noise that may be heard on the recording. If you are not successful the first time and do not get anything on your recording, try to repeat it another day around the same time. You can actually tell your spirits that you will be doing it again on a particular day at a particular time and invite them to join you. This gives them time to get to know you and become comfortable around you. Do not get frustrated if you do not get anything the first few times you try. Just when you are ready to give up, many times you will get your first EVP.

During playback of the audio there is no need to turn  the sound up all the way unless you've listened to it and were not able to hear anything other than yourself.  If you have a digital recorder that offers a USB connection, you can upload it to your computer and be able to play with the recording a little easier as far as quickly repeating a certain section, etc.  A good set of earphones really makes listening an easier task and you can eliminate any other noises going on while you are listening. If you do come across anything please let us know, we'd love to hear it too!
